Yoga Therapy

In yoga, immeasurable techniques and principles have evolved over thousands of years. It has been perfected by great yogis during their lifetime. It is incessantly being practiced generation after generation, in string without fail and is still remaining to grow in liveliness. Time is only making these principles more and more contemporary. These principles of yoga can be applied by the practitioners on others to bring about a multitude of desired effects on them. This is called application of yoga. In Sanskrit it is called Viniyoga. Yoga Sutra, the most authoritative text on yoga, prescribes the most apt definition for viniyoga Tasya bhum;su viniyogah - (Yoga Sutra III.6)

Application of yoga should be according to the constitution of the individual. Yoga sutra succinctly instructs that the application of yoga should respect the individuality in every individual. No two individuals are identical in all respects. Therefore application of yoga should be individualized.

If yoga is applied after complete and comprehensive study of the individual, one can avoid unnecessary apprehension about the result of such application. Viniyoga presupposes two important requirements.

Application should emerge from within: Yoga therapists should have - complete knowledge and adequate practical experience of what is going to be applied.

Application should be preceded by examination: Every individual should be studied comprehensively before application of yoga.

Therefore, a therapist should have a very clear and complete understanding about the following aspects: 'on whom' and 'for what purpose’, Yoga is being applied.
Only after a practitioner is able to clearly recognize the individuality of the individual and the specific requirement, he should venture further. The practitioner should also ensure that he is applying yoga based on his experience and not directly from what he has heard, studied, learned or memorized. Application of yoga should be according to the constitution of the individual. Yoga sutra succinctly instructs that the application of yoga should respect the individuality in every individual. No two individuals are identical in all respects. Therefore application of yoga should be individualized.

For example, somebody may have blood pressure because of some family history, somebody else may have blood pressure because of some stress, somebody may have blood pressure because of anxiety, somebody may have blood pressure because of that period in their life, somebody may have blood pressure, high blood pressure suddenly because of a broken relationship. We need to take into account all these factors to exactly form a programme of Yoga. It could be relaxation for somebody, it could be some breathing exercises for somebody, it could be some Āsana for somebody, it could be some meditation for somebody, and for somebody it could be just talking to the person, just to establish a friendly relationship and console them. The condition is the same and these are all Yoga. As far as the doctor is concerned it is blood pressure. For somebody else maybe none of these things work but maybe we have to talk to them about their diet or their lifestyle.

Like a mother caring her child, every yoga therapist should consider the following:

  1. 1. Maintenance and enhancement of the existing positive health.
  2. 2. Prevention of any possible future ailments.
  3. 3. Recuperation and/or complete eradication of any prevailing ailments.

Yoga is at its best in providing the first and the second components. One can see many regular practitioners of yoga harnessing their positive health with increased endurance, strength and energy levels. Their mental equanimity and emotional balance also maintained. I have seen many ardent practitioners of yoga able to prevent or postpone many genetic problems. Even if some are afflicted, as humans are generally prone to, they do not suffer from any of the later complications of the disease and are able to establish a diligent and sustained control over the ailment with minimal medical intervention. It is for this reason; more and more people are turning towards Yoga therapy now. Yoga therapy is an application, to bestow healing on to the practitioner.

The main principles of this form of Yoga therapy are:

  1. 1.Yukta-shiksana Teach what is appropriate to the individual.
  2. 2. Bheda Differences in different people must be respected.
  3. 3. Desha Teachings must consider the situation, place, or country from which the student comes.
  4. 4.Deha - Each person needs to be taught according to his or her individual constitution, age, disposition, etc.(i.e., obese, lean, young, old, etc.).
  5. 5.Kâla - The method of instruction depends on the time of year, the seasons, etc.
  6. 6.Vritti - Depending on the occupation of the student, he or she will need to be taught different things (e.g., a runner would be taught differently than a philosopher).
  7. 7.Shakti - One must understand the capacity of the student, how much endurance he or she has, how much memory, how much time to study or practice.
  8. 8.Mârga - The teaching must conform to the direction of the mind (i.e., it must take a person’s interests into account, such as exercise, devotion, God, chanting, etc.).

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners stimulate specific points on the body, usually by inserting thin needles through the skin. Studies suggest that acupuncture stimulates the release of the body’s natural painkillers and affects areas in the brain involved in processing pain; however, some trials suggest that real acupuncture and sham acupuncture are equally effective, indicating a placebo effect. Results from a number of studies, however, suggest real acupuncture may help ease types of pain that are often chronic, such as low-back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis/knee pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. It also may help reduce the frequency of tension headaches and prevent migraine headaches

Paadha Guasa Therapy

Massage Therapy

We are offering Thokkanam Massage Therapy. Thokkanam is one of the 32 forms of Puramaruthuvam in siddha medicine. Thokkanam is a word framed by combining two words Thokku and Anam – Thokku means skin, Anam mean support/tones/heat. Thokkanam focuses on treating diseases caused by aggravation of Vatham, the kinetic force of the body. The humoral theory of Siddha states that Vatham is the active force responsible for the physiological functioning of Neuro muscular as well as musculo-skeletal systems. Thokkanam is also useful in diseases where Pitham, as well as Kapham is disturbed. A simple Thokkanam session removes the sedentary feeling, which is due to aggravation of Kapham. As per the basic principles of Siddha, the meeting points of muscles, nerves, joints and skin including hair roots are places of flow of the vital energy – Vatham. A depletion of the vital energy may lead to pain, altered tone, twitching, spasticity, rigidity, numbness and neuritis.
